Preparing for your online behaviour consultation

Thanks for booking your behaviour consultation. To help us make the most of our time together, please take a few minutes to read the information below.

Tech setup

  • We’ll meet on Google Meet. You’ll receive a link in your booking confirmation.

  • Test your camera and microphone before our session. If you can, log in a few minutes early so we can start on time.

  • Set up your device (phone, tablet, or computer) so I can see both you and your dog, ideally full body for each. A tripod, phone stand, or even a stack of books can help you get a good angle.

  • Good light helps. Face a window if you can, or turn on extra lights so we can both see clearly.

  • Stable internet. If your Wi-Fi is patchy, try moving closer to your router or asking others in your household to avoid streaming during our call.

Environment

  • Choose a quiet space with minimal distractions.

  • If you have more than one dog, have a way to separate them so we can focus on one at a time.

  • Keep your dog’s usual gear nearby: collar or harness, and a lead (we may or may not use it).

Rewards and readiness

You know your dog best, so prepare in whatever way suits them:

  • We want them motivated but comfortable, not starving or wiped out.

  • Have small, soft, tasty treats ready, like chicken, cheese, or commercial training treats.

  • If your dog isn’t very food-motivated, try using part of their meal or a higher-value option.

  • For active or easily distracted dogs, a long-lasting chew during the information-gathering part can help them settle while we talk.

  • A treat pouch is handy for quick and effective delivery of rewards.

What to expect

Our first session focuses on:

  • Understanding your dog’s history, routines, and behaviour patterns.

  • Setting clear goals for what you’d like to change or build.

  • Discussing management strategies, which are temporary adjustments to your environment or routine that help prevent unwanted behaviour and provide quick relief.

  • Beginning some foundation training exercises where appropriate. I often use my own dogs to demonstrate techniques so you can follow along with yours and see what we’re aiming for.

Notes and recording

You’ll receive a written summary of our discussion and next steps after the session, so don’t worry about capturing everything yourself. You’re welcome to jot down questions or thoughts if that helps you stay engaged.

I sometimes use AI-assisted note-taking to support documentation. This is for my eyes only and helps ensure accuracy and consistency in your written plan. You can opt out of this if you prefer, just let me know before we begin.

After the session

You’ll receive your written plan, along with any relevant handouts or videos. You’re welcome to email me with questions about your plan after you’ve had time to review it.

Cancellations

If you need to reschedule, please provide at least 48 hours’ notice. Sessions cancelled with less notice incur the full fee.

A final note

It’s completely normal if your dog doesn’t behave “perfectly” during our session. That’s actually helpful because it gives us real information to work with. The goal isn’t to impress anyone, it’s to understand what’s happening and create practical, kind changes for both of you.
